Méribel’s two lift companies, Méribel Alpina and S3V, have been busy over the summer preparing new facilities for the winter season. In the Méribel sector work is continuing on a new section of the Gelinotte piste. In the past this fairly steep blue run leading to the Chaudanne has regularly been used for competitions, requiring it to be divided into two narrow halves. This winter a totally new section through the forest will be available to recreational skiers, while racers use the old Gelinotte piste. The new section will also offer an easier descent to the resort.
The recently created Eterlou piste (finished in 2004) has now been equipped with 15 snow canons to provide improved snow cover. This run, which starts at the top of the Plan de l’Homme chairlift, is always very quiet and so worth seeking out, especially now it will have even better snow cover. Installation of cultured snowmaking is now completed at the neighbouring Moonpark which has been equipped over the summer with a further three snowcanons.
Be careful when you get off the Plan de l’Homme chairlift this winter – to the right of the arrival area is a new reservoir! This new lake at 1995m altitude has been created to feed the snowcanons on the Tougnète side of the valley. Water will be pumped up from the Doron river before the winter and the reservoir will hold enough water to last the season – 60 000 cubic metres in total.
Last year’s introduction of hands-free liftpasses throughout the Three Valleys was highly popular. If you bought the reusable P@S last season remember to bring it with you this year as it can be recharged, saving you 3€. As well as being able to recharge it online before your arrival in the resort, it can now also be recharged by a new call centre. From France call 0892 56 73 73 (calls cost 0.34 € per minute)
In the Mottaret sector lift company S3V is installing a new 6 seat chairlift called Chatelet (see photo). It is due to be completed for the start of the season and will serve the beginners’ ZEN zone and the Plattières Snowpark. It replaces the old slow Chatelet chairlift and, most importantly, starts further down the mountain near the Sitelle restaurant so it can be accessed from the Matre piste. As well as speeding up transport in this popular area, it will offer an alternative route from Mottaret to Val Thorens using only chairlifts i.e. with no need to remove skis/board.
Finally, a much needed restaurant building and WCs will be open at the foot of the Mont Vallon lift. The new Plan des Mains building will offer 3 floors of restaurants, including a gastronomic and a tradional French restaurant and a self-service eatery.
