Recommendation for Italy?

Beitrag von porter »

Hello:

I apologize for the English, but my German is no good!

I would like to make my first ski trip to Italy this January, in low season.

I can find good information on the handful of large alpine resorts, but there are a staggering number of smaller areas to chose from so I am hoping for some suggestions.

I have specific requests for an area to base myself for 8 nights, or two areas for 4 nights each.

I would fly in and out of either Venice or Munich, and would like an area easily reached by train and bus in about 3 hours.

I would like an area that:

*is within 3 or 4 hours by bus and train from either Munich or Venice (or perhaps Milan)
*has a town large enough to find a variety of accomodation (I am a budget traveler)
*has enough variety to ski one area, or more, each day without much repetition
*and if I choose two towns, in order that I do not miss any skiing they must be easily reached by bus or train in 2 or 3 hours

I am more interested in village to village skiing and less interested in the amenities of large resorts. While good snow is a plus, an area with exceptional snow is not necessary.

My first thoughgts are Canazei, which I have visited in summer, and Selva Gardena/Val Gardena, which would seem to have a number of areas to ski at.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum.

I can give you some advice to your initial idea: Canacei or Val Gardena. Choose on of this villages/towns and stay there. You can ski to different locations around the Sella mountain group every day, including Sella Ronda. Only the first few lifts and slopes every morning/afternoon will be the same. Oher good bases to stay around Sella are Arabba for a sportive skier or Alta Badia (Corvara, La Villa ...) for a relaxed skier. These two resorts also offer easier bus/taxi access to nearby Cortina, if you are interested. Lowest prices for accomodation are maybe in Val di Fassa (Canacei, Campitello). Most ski-in, ski-out accomodation are maybe in Colfosco (Alta Badia).

In general I think you can reach any Italian Ski resort from Milan or Venice or even Munich (Munich is only good for South tyrol/Trentino though) in 3-4 hours. Of course there are other great resort (Madonna, Livigno, Courmayeur ...) which I don't know. Hopefully other will give you advice on them.

If you are interested in an ski-in,ski-out appartment in La Villa (Alta Badia) for an modest price PM me. Of Course modest depends on the number of travellers you are. One person in an appartment is never cheap.

Apart from the already mentioned Sella area in Südtirol/Trentino there some more places which may suit to your requirements:
- Kronplatz + Ahrntal + Pustertal in the very north section of Südtirol
- Val di sole (Trentino) together with Tonale, Pejo and Madonna
- Aosta Valley (flights to Milan/ Torino) with several skiing areas within 2 hours from Aosta city (Pila next to Aosta, La Thuile, Courmayeur, Valtournenche/Cervinia, Monterosa, Camporcher)
- Via lattea (Torino: Sestrière area)
