Monte Amiata- Siena

Yesterday morning I woke up early. So I decide to have a nice day of ski.
near Siena there is this ex-volcano, Mt. Amiata (1730 m.). Mt. Amiata is just inside Val d'Orcia natural Park and slopes go from 1730 m to 1300.

Unfortunately lifts are too old. I think they are the same of '70 years age...
Slopes are too close and short...but for a morning or a a day-ski could goes well.
Snow:
down 1.50 meter
top 2,60 meter
temperature down at 12.00 p.m. 2°
km of slopes: 12 km
nordic ski: 4 km

I hour far from siena... We must be happy!
I usually go in Abetone that is much interesting, but for 3-4 hour of ski...Mt. amiata goes well!

Great to see that there is so much snow this year. The last 2 years were very bad (when I was in Italy), so I wasn't there. Maybe this year, I'll be in the Appennino end of february, this time I want to make the southern part, if there's enough snow, and Amiata will be a nice in-between stop.

I happened to visit the Amiata 9 years ago - it is just a great landmark. Nice to see that skiing is still alive there.

Yes Kut, you have used best word: "amiata ...is still alive"
the problem is that sea is too close!! 30 km and you are on sea-side!
So, now we have over 2 meter of snow but we will waiting this week wind from south and snow over 1700 meter!! Cazzo!!

Starli, I suggest you Abetone. Now this is one of best Appennine ski area. Good bahn, good slopes and...of course snow, snow, snow!!
These are snow depth levels:
1200 m. 2.20 meter
1500 m. 3.00 meter
1750 m. 3.30 meter
1950 m. 4.00 meter.

Last year we close season on 11th of may. This year of course we will ski over june

Amiata will probably close on march. If you love freeride you can go also in Campo Imperatore where we can usually ski on may and first days of june. Then summer bring away snow
we are too clos to Africa!!
