With four inches of snow already on the ground in Evergreen and up to 12 more still expected to fall before mid-day, a wiintry storm is complicating the morning drive and giving at least some students the first snow day of the year.
As of 5:30 a.m., the following schools were closed due to the weather: Agate District 300, Bennett School Dist., Brookstone Christian Academy Byers School Dist. 32-J, Clear Creek RE-1, Colorado School for the Deaf and Blind, Deer Creek Elementary, Deer Trail School Dist. 26J, Elbert Co., Elizabeth C-1 Elbert School Dist. 200, Estes Park Schools, Fitzsimmons Middle School, Kiowa C-2, Legacy Academy, Lewis-Palmer Dist. 38, Park Co. Schools RE-2, Platte Canyon Dist. 1, Platte Canyon High School, Regis Jesuit HS - Opening at 9:00 AM, Strasburg Dist. 31-J, Woodland Park RE-2.
U.S. 6 was closed at Loveland Pass in the high country, along with Highway 285 at Kenosha Pass. Mountain driving conditions were treacherous icy, and snowpacked, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.
A winter storm warning continued for the metro area, and most of the Front Range, along I-70, with a blizzard warning in Colorado Springs and Pueblo, where high gusting winds are expected.
Some of the heaviest snow still to come was expected in Douglas County.
Another two inches of snow could fall in downtown Denver, but most of it will melt on roadways.
Crews have been working all night to keep runways clear at Denver International Airport, according to spokesman Chuck Cannon. As of 5 a.m., he said, Pena Boulevard was slushy and icy.
"Motorists are going to have to use some caution driving to or from the airfield," he said. "Things are moving a little slower than normal, but pretty good considering the conditions." He said de-icing delays should be expected.
"Overall the airport is operating fairly well so we ll continue to monitor conditions," he said.

Probleme bereitete den Chauffeuren der besonders rutschige Nassschnee auf der Fahrbahn. Teils heftige Schneefälle gab es am Donnerstagabend und am Freitag in mehreren Teilen Schwedens. Im Lauf des Freitag werden auch in Finnland die ersten Schneefälle in den südlicheren Teilen des Landes erwartet.
