Skigebiet am middle March - SFL oder Ischgl/Samnaun ??

I will be in Austria 12-17 March..

i will go (of course) for skiing-boarding but...
i am between Stubai Glacier, or Hauser Kaibling?

any suggestions?
you think is better at Stubai because the weather could be mild on March,
or it is to early to go at Glacier, and it is better at Haus?

For the last few years, the middle of March (10-25.3) has always brought along some serious snowfall, followed by sunshine and warm temperatures until late April. However, conditions can vary and change fairly quickly. On March 20th 2008, we had a -27°C cold blizzard on the Pitztaler Glacier. On March 27th 2009, snow on the glacier was already beginning to melt.

If you head for Stubai, definately buy a Stubaier Superskipass to be able to switch to Schlick 2000 or the "Elfer" in case of bad weather conditions.

Hauser could certainly mean corn snow for you because of the low altitude (max. 2000m). Still, I would consider it to be a good choice, too.

Hi!
I don't understand why you only include Stubai Glacier and Hauser Kaibling in your decision. I think middle march is the optimal season for non-glacier resorts with altitudes between 1500 and 3000m. Only slopes with a southern exposition may be "sulzig" in altitudes under 2000m.

furthermore i want enough blue slopes for my wife

it is only 4 days of skiing, and i know the slopes of stubai (and my wife also) and i dont want to lose time to "Get known" with the resort..

also the Hauser Kaibling is small so...


do you have any other suggestions?
the only non-glacier resort i know with high altitude is Ischgl

Some more resorts:
- Warth-Schroecken, only few blue slopes, most of the resort is exposed to north, except auenfeld
- Sulden: up to 3000m, in combination with Schnalstal there enough slopes for few days of skiing
- Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis, North Face of Fiss has good conditions even, its very warm, Masner and Scheid Area are also very high.
- Lenzerheide: the West face on the morning, switch to the East Side in the afternoon.
- upper Engadin with Diavolezza/Corvatsch and Corviglia.

Warth-Schroecken it is not so high altitude as i know...of course is very snow-secure..

however i check for Sulden-Schnalstal ... they have perfect grooming as i saw...

Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis is a very nice resort but i would like to have more days, if we will go there, not only 4

after your suggestions, i am between

SFL (i will stay at Ried)
or
Ischgl/Samnaun (i will stay at Spiss near Samn.)

the place of accommodation does not bother me since i will go by car, but i cant choose between the two resorts
both are high altitude...both are enough big for 4 days (maybe too big), both have modern facilities...both have nice wide runs, for all levels...
do you think SFL will have more people than the Swiss side of Silvretta??

any opinions? or any help to decide?

If SFL or Ischgl/Samnaun are the alternatives, I would choose Ischgl/Samnaun. They really have modern facilities and the ski resort is large and varied.
I have often been there in March - in my opinion it's the best time for a stay in Ischgl/Samnaun. The snow conditions are usually very good at this time and there is a great chance to have sunny weather.

Normally I would say it doesn't matter if you go to SFL or Samnaun.
But this year I would very prever Samnaun/Ischgl:
The ski area is bigger than SFL (230km <-> 180 ), but the Skiresort is built more compact. So you can test very fast which parts of the Ski area you like best. This is even more importan if you have only 4 days for skiing! SFL ist very streched you need at least two days to get a good imagination.
Moreover SFL has this year especially by comparision with Silvretta very bad conditions.

I don't know the way from Spiss to Samnaun, but from Ried to SFL you have to pass much serpentines.
Another advantage of Samnaun: fuel is very cheap there!

Starting at Pfunds it only takes about 20 minutes to each resort. Free parking is available both at the Twinliner (Samnaun) and at the Waldbahn (Fiss).
This way you could check for best conditions: Warm weather--> Ischgl for sure!

Spiss is less than 10 km from Talstation of Samnaun (according to Via Michelin)
Furthermore from www.tiroler-oberland.com ----> "In nur 7 km erreichen Sie die Talstation zur international bekannten Silvretta-Arena Samnaun/Ischgl."

However i think you are right about the SFL. If i need 1 or 2 days to be familiar with the resort...then...
Maybe Silvretta is better option for this short break.
