Where in January??

first of all sorry for the English.
i need your help.
i will be in Austria from 16 January till 26 January.
I dont know where to go.
After too much thinking, i am between Dachstein Tauern, and Zell Am See/Kaprun. Where do you think it is better?
I am an intermmediate snowboarder...from 0 to 10, where 10 is pro-snowboarder i am around 4.
I dont care about apres ski, and parties etc.
I only want to make good boarding, somewhere where it is not over-crowded. After thought i override Obertauern, and Zillertal Arena. So where do you think it is better???
Dachstein, or Europasportregion?

I'v been 5 times to Schladming and I just love it, over there u've got 4 different mountains, u can decide where u wanna go each day, u can reach each mountain just by board,...thats really cool!

I've never been to Zell am See, so can't tell u something bout that!

I don't think that one of these two will be crowded in January. They're maybe crowded in the Christmas/New Year time and around Eastern, but not in January. I've never been in Kaprun but in Dachstein Tauern. My opinion is, that there are too many streets (Rohrmoos) you have to cross. It's just annoying.

You mentioned Obertauern and Zillertal Arena, too. Are these also a possibility?
Obertauern in January is very cold. They have just one gondola und most of the chairlifts don't have Bubbles.
I've never been to Zillertal Arena, but some of my friends told me, that you can go skiing there very very well.

Do you already know, where you will stay exactly, so that we can help you finding a skiing area which is close by?

well if i go in Dachstein i will stay in Haus..
in Europasportregion i got an good offer from Piesendorf, which is exactly in the middle of Kaprun-Zell am See

Zillertal Arena is cool, but i will arrive in Munchen at 19.15, so i dont want to drive either the two ways to Zillertal (from Pass Thurn or from Hainzeberg etc), so i decided not to go there.

About Obertauern i have an offer from Tweng.
I dont know about Obertauern...i think is too much apre-ski for me. I want to go for pure boarding and i will go with my wife so i dont care at all about bars, clubs etc.
I want a nice quite place, with good snow, and nice slopes for intermmediate boarder-skier. Also i dont care about cold. I will definitely make a visit in Dachstein Glacier if i will go in Dachstein Tauern...otherwise Kitzsteinhorn...so the cold is not the problem.

If the cold is no problem, I would recommend Obertauern. Of course in Obertauern there is some Apres-Ski, but you don´t have to get touched with it. Obertauern has the advantage of really great snow conditions and quite empty slopes.

I went to the area around Radstadt an Schladming now for continously 5 years and for my opinion there is nothing as good as Obertauern.

When you go to Obertauern I would recommend a stay in Untertauern instead of Tweng, because it ´s on the same price level like Tweng, it is nearer to Munich, and you have the Chance to go by bus quite fast to Obertauern, Radstadt/Altenmarkt and more far away to Zauchensee, Flachau or Schladming too (for all the resorts including Obertauern you would need the Salzburger Superskicard).

kaprun is quite good, and I'm sure, that you could find some good accom in Kaprun or even in Zell am See.
The skipass is valid at three resorts; Kitztsteinhorn (the glacier), Maiskogel and Schmittenhöhe (Zell am See).

Usually january isn't so overcrowded. The peak season is around Xmas and in February (school holidays)

january isn't the best time to ride at OT, cause nearly the whole resort is located above the tree line, and if the weather is bad, then white out is guaranteed.

at Kaprun-zell am See you could ride even at snowy days, cause Schmittenhöhe and Maiskogel offer some excellent tree runs.

so you mean that in January, there is a big chance because of bad weather to close some lifts etc???

i hate this...i went to ischgl few years ago, and i had this problem 2 or 3 days from the 6 i had for boarding.... big disaster for my trip...

Unfortunately, i will go only one time to the Alps this year...and maybe for summer ski.
So i dont want to destroy my days, because of the weather...
Thats why i am thinking alternatives of OT, and i rejected Ischgl...
I cant decide between Dachstein or Kaprun/Zell....

I would take Kaprun because you have 3 skiing areas (Kitzsteinhorn, Maiskogel, Schmittenhoehe) so I think it doesn't get boring that fast...

i am not gona be bored. I dont care about this.Instead...my wife is not so good, so i want to have a few nice slopes to go with her always in order to improve her skiing...

^^Than you are definitly right in Zell am See- Kaprun. At the Schmittenhöhe and also at the Kitzsteinhorn/ Maiskogel are black slopes, red slopes and blue slopes.
When you go to Zell am See- Kaprun you have also the option of Saalbach- Hinterglemm, if you want to go to another ski area. But here you have to buy an seperate skipass for Saalbach- you are not allowed to use the skipass from Zell- Kaprun .

And for the definitive confusion: All kinds of slopes, trees for bad weather, modern lifts and so on you will have also in the Dachstein-Tauern-Region...

I know the three mentioned ski-areas (Obertauern, Schmittenhöhe and Dachstein-Tauern), don't like Obertauern but the two others very much. For ten days I would prefer Dachstein-Tauern because the four mountains include a lot of change and fun.

At the bottom of Schmittenhöhe you will find some really nice bunny slopes with beginner tows and T-Bar lifts.
Schmittenhöhe is abolutely suitable for all levels; cause 33,33% oft the slopes are blue another 33,33 % red and the last 33,33 % is black.
For your girlfriend I would advice the Maiskogel; blue runs from the top of the mountain into the valley and all the slopes serviced by high-speed chairlifts (one quad and one six-pack). At the midstation you will find a T-bar with a beginner area and a funpark for riders and freestyle skiers too.
If you purchase the Salzburg Super Ski card, then you can take a visit in two nearby resorts; Kitzbühel and Saalbach. Both offer for you enough slopes for 10 days.
However the Kaprun-Zell am See area itself will be enough too.

If the temps are high and the weather is mild, then you can ski and ride at Kitzsteinhorn (glacier).

Schladming (Dachstein Tauern) is also good, however the Dachstein glacier is quite small and boring, except you are a boarder and stay all day long at the funpark. Cause they have an excellent funpark. Btw, Kitzsteinhorn too..
