The old Penkenbahn in Mayrhofen started in 1955 as a common bi-cable reversible ropeway (Pendelbahn). Cabins where travelling directly from the lower to the upper station and back.
Between 1955 and 1995, two more large cabins where added halfway to the track, this to increase capacity. At boarding, one cabin was in the lower station, two cabins halfway at the tower in the middle of the track and one in the upper station. I believe all cabins where fixed to the same traction rope, meaning that they where not two independent ropeways. All cabins had to move at the same time. A platform had been build at the tower. Passengers had to change there. No need to see that it was only posible to run half strokes since this modification had been made.
This strange kind of ropeway has been replaced by the well known circulating bi-cable ropeway, build by Waagner-Biro in 1995. Does anyone have detailed information on the old Penkenbahn? Pictures perhaps? Pictures or information on similar ropeways?
Please answer in German. I'll understand.
